This is the Spring

June 14, 2020 Filed Under: Making, Poems in Lockdown, Poetry

This is the spring when YoYo Ma
played Dvorjak to a cartoon of cows
from his kitchen

This is the spring when the Kanneh-Mason family
live-streamed Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto
from their living room

This is the spring of Folk on Foot’s
front room festival
and online gigs with awful sound
and National theatre plays for free on TV

This is the spring when they played bingo
from balcony to balcony
In Ringsend, Dublin

This is the spring when we ran like rabbits
round the streets and along the beach
in our exercise hour

This is the spring when yeast and flour
leapt off the shelves
faster than the Figgate burn
rushed out to sea

This is the spring of mass weeding and planting,
and seeds of beetroot, kale and pepper
are hard to find

This is the spring when we learnt the song of robin and wren,
and heard the song thrush again
and picked up paint and pastel and pen

This is the spring of no new clothes but new recipes,
The spring of the talking screen
The spring when Time Out became Time In

This is the spring of re-jigging all that we know
