No we cannot swim together

June 14, 2020 Filed Under: Making, Poems in Lockdown, Poetry, Wild Swimming

No, we cannot sing together –
we cannot feel that hum of vibration dancing through our cells,
making us well, together.
But we are held together,
we meet and greet and grow together,
and with the eyes we know and the smiles we share,
we move together.
And when we sing (all muted up)
I see the song dance through your face in this online place,
and with 20 faces aglow with beat and pitch and word,
we sing together, we sing together.

No, we cannot swim together,
grinning and yelping as we enter the freezing Forth.
But your voice still laughs,
and Sue’s tub of vegan peanut cookies is still open to share,
and Brighid has chosen her hat with care.
Catherine talks us through our strokes together,
and today you join us from Gairloch and Wemyss Bay to swim together,
so with swimmers, hat and goggles in 16 boxes on a screen together,
we swim together, we swim together.
